190Wh/kg!

"BYD is currently developing a second-generation blade battery system, which will be released in August 2024." Recently, at the 2023 financial report investor communication meeting, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu revealed. It is understood that the energy density of the new generation blade battery will reach 190Wh/kg, and the range of pure electric models will exceed 1000km.

Blade batteries are BYD's flagship product. In March 2020, BYD launched its first generation blade battery, with an energy density of 140Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 230Wh/L, which was significantly better than similar products. After assembling the vehicle, the range can reach a level comparable to that of ternary lithium batteries.

Compared to ordinary lithium iron phosphate batteries, BYD's blade batteries have better safety. The first generation blade batteries passed rigorous testing conditions such as needle piercing, squeezing, bending, heating to a high temperature of 300 ° C in a furnace, and overcharging up to 260%. After these tests, none of the blade batteries have experienced any fire or explosion.

According to Wang Chuanfu, "Blade batteries reflect BYD's determination to completely end the pain points of new energy vehicle safety, and are more capable of leading the global power battery technology path back on track, completely erasing the word 'spontaneous combustion' from the dictionary of new energy vehicles."

It is understood that BYD's second-generation blade battery adopts a new electrolyte formula, which can effectively reduce the internal resistance of the battery and improve its low-temperature discharge capacity. The data shows that the discharge capacity of the second generation blade battery product is 80% at -30 ℃, which is 10% higher than the first generation product and higher than that of ternary batteries.

In terms of customers, many car companies around the world currently have a strong preference for blade batteries. Including FAW, Changan, Toyota, Tesla, Ford, Daimler, Beiqi Foton, XCMG, JAC, etc., all have already assembled or plan to assemble blade batteries. BYD Vice President and Chairman of Ford Battery, He Long, said, "All the car brands you can think of are discussing cooperation plans based on blade battery technology with us."

It is worth noting that the recently announced Xiaomi SU7 is also equipped with blade batteries. The Xiaomi SU7 is available in standard, Pro Long Range, and Max versions, with prices of 215900 yuan, 245900 yuan, and 299900 yuan respectively. The Xiaomi SU7 standard version is equipped with a 73.6kWh BYD lithium iron phosphate blade battery, with a CLTC range of 700km.

The Xiaomi SU7 Pro and Max versions are equipped with 94.3kWh CATL Shenxing and Kirin batteries, with CLTC ranges of 830km and 800km respectively.

"At present, the new energy industry has entered the knockout stage, and 2024-2026 is a decisive battle in terms of scale, cost, and technology." Wang Chuanfu pointed out that the accelerated launch of new energy products by Chinese automakers will erode the joint venture brand market. In the next 3-5 years, the share of joint venture brands will decrease from 40% to 10%, with 30% being the future growth space for Chinese brands.

In addition to the release of the second generation blade battery, Wang Chuanfu also stated that BYD will launch the fifth generation DMI hybrid technology in May this year, with a fuel consumption of 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers and a full fuel and electric range of 2000 kilometers.
